General Hospital: How Port Charles Beat Soap Opera Extinction

How GH survived the soap opera extinction by slashing budgets, mastering social media, and keeping the drama fast-paced.

General Hospital Outlives All My Children - ABC

It’s interesting that if you do a Google search about General Hospital (GH), the results might tell you that fans since the 1963 debut are aging or even passing away. That suggests a decline in viewers. But does that really hold true? After all, the ABC daytime show still gets tons of fans while other popular shows disappeared. Read on for more details.

Staying Relevant

GH continues onward while other soap operas faded away. So, the question is whether it survived its rivals because it stayed relevant to a changing audience? While the show survived the ’60s and ’70s, in the 1980s, it became much more than just another doctor and nurse story.

Notably, the introduction of complex characters and relationships helped to cement the hearts of viewers. In particular, EBSCO noted that the Luke and Laura storyline became a “cultural phenomenon.” The wedding of the duo pulled in 30 million viewers. Actually, that broke the history books for a daytime soap.

Naturally, ABC execs decided that keeping the show going needed to fit the budget at a time when other soaps started sliding away. Perhaps the secret to success lay in the storylines that kept folks talking about the show each day. Of course, spoilers hit the right notes because everyone tried guessing what happened next.

Cheaper Production Costs

Talking about budgets, the General Hospital show also found a way to get around heavy costs. Although it’s heavy going on the cast with multiple episodes shot daily, the leaner budget didn’t kill the quality of the actors involved.

However, fears arose that when All My Children ended in 2011, GH would be next on the chopping block. That never happened. Why? Well, the production team went all out on fewer costs. While All My Children struggled, the crew in Port Charles focused on keeping the brand strong and the costs low. So, it was an all-around win-win decision.

Fast-Paced Stories

Another changing factor that made GH a success was the fast pace that kept up with tech like the internet and cable TV. These factors also brought in a younger audience who generally seem vocal and keen to discuss things they see on the show. While old-timers reminisce about the olden days, the younger fans aren’t scared to keep the writers on their toes.

While some of the stories on General Hospital beggar belief, folks seem to enjoy the social media debate about it. And then, because the writers lean towards mobsters, spies, and the allure of crime, it keeps the show interesting. Meanwhile, other shows simply didn’t really move with the times.
