General Hospital (GH) fans grew used to outlandish things on the ABC daytime drama. Actually, think weather machines and frozen heirs like Tony Cassadine (André Landzaat). Not to mention loads of unlikely resurrections. But recently, the biological “miracle” of Maxie Jones, (Kirsten Storms) came into the spotlight.

The Coma Storyline

Daytime soap fans knew that Kirsten Storms took medical leave for a few months. Naturally, the showrunners had to do something with Maxie Jones. So, she ended up in a coma for months on end. For a while, ABC fans wondered if Kirsten might never return to the show. But she did.

This week, GH fans saw Maxie wake up. Yay! Anyway, many viewers presumed that a long storyline would arrive about her slow recovery. But, that didn’t happen. Instead, she missed much time in ICU and literally dashed off in a hurry.

Soap Opera Physics vs. Reality

In the non-fictional medical world, a six-month coma probably comes with loads of complex recovery issues. For example, there would likely be muscular atrophy. Plus, you would require intensive physio just to sit unaided.

However, in Port Charles, Maxie Jones woke up and seemed ready to hit a met gala function in no time at all. Notably, GH fans didn’t miss that. And if they did, another cast member reminded them of the moment.

Bradford’s Podcast

On a recent episode of the That’s Awesome podcast, Bradford Anderson (Damian Spinelli) chatted briefly about the recovery of Maxie Jones. While he admitted that it was great having Kirsten back on the set, he also laughed about his reunion being the ultimate “clickbait.”

Naturally, General Hospital fans also felt thrilled that Kirsten Storms was back at work. In the comments, they didn’t really care too much about her unlikely susper-fast recovery. One of them opined, “Yes, Kirsten Storms is back. Touching moments when Spinelli and Maxie hugged.”

Why the Rush?

The “fast-forward” recovery also served another purpose, and if you think about it, it probably tied into filming the tribute for the late Anthony Geary.

While that seemed sad, Maxie’s return brings some joy to GH fans. Of course, by skipping the bed pans, walkers, and intensive therapy, writers could then jump straight into the Spinelli reunion.

What Other Fans Said

When Michael Fairman TV wrote about the coma recovery, one commenter using the name of Satan wrote in the discussion area:

OK we all know that Maxie’s trip to veggieland was a relatively short one, by GH standards. But she immediately wakes up, jumps out of bed and yells at her kid to wear a helmet? That’s one HELL of a recovery. Not even the momentary “rubber legs” we saw when Lulu woke up.

Meanwhile, another anonymous commenter penned, “How many people are in a coma for that long and can get up out the bed and walk across the floor?”

Still, at least the show picks up the Maxie Jones storyline again and everyone loves to see more action from their favorite TV stars.
