General Hospital Star Maurice Benard Is All In For Sonny and Nina

General Hospital spoilers reveal Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Nina (Cynthia Watros) continuing to grow closer while Carly (Laura Wright) continues to yell at Nina, blow off Sonny, and complain, complain, complain to anyone who will listen and even those who will not.

While Carly yelling and complaining is not new and is a feature — not a bug — of this character, having a viable new love interest for Sonny is new and something we haven’t seen in a long time. And Maurice Benard is absolutely loving it.

General Hospital Spoilers: Maurice Benard Loves His New Story

When you look at Twitter, it seems some fans have forgotten that Sonny and Carly have been married five times and frequently cheat on one another as this is a soap opera and cheating is part of the brand, and it is especially part of the Carson brand.

As fans have been tweeting to Benard that they can’t believe he would play a storyline where his character will likely cheat on his wife, it’s like many weren’t watching just a few brief years ago when Sonny slept with Carly’s divorce lawyer so she slept with Jax. This is what Sonny and Carly do. And Benard has to remind some fans that he is not Sonny and is just playing a role.

“Actually I’ve been married over 30 years,” he said on Twitter. “I have only been with my wife but this is a TV show and TV shows need to have ratings. And fortunately or unfortunately for you they’re doing great. It’s always about what’s best for the show nothing personal.”

Change Is Good For Soaps and GH

With Carson doing the same dance over and over again for years, Benard is loving the change, as is a large portion of the audience singing Sonny and Nina’s praises on social media. For those who don’t like the story or some of the characters, Benard explained the drama is best for GH at the moment, and GH is…a soap opera.

“I go wherever it is best for the show and fortunately right now this story is doing well, even better than well now you may not want to hear that,” Benard tweeted. “You already know I love Laura and Cynthia. I keep saying this is between history and change, I think after 20 years change is good.”

Benard even hints that this change may (or may not) be temporary.

“Don’t think I don’t understand its history against change,” the actor said. “And history is hard to fight, but sometimes change is necessary and it doesn’t mean you won’t go back to history.” Stay tuned to General Hospital weekdays to see how this story plays out.
