Benard plays Sonny Corinthos, a bipolar character on General Hospital. In his latest episode of the series, he welcomed his casting director for the ABC daytime drama, Mark Teschner.
Mark Teschner Had A Lot To Say To Maurice Benard
Teschner had much to say. He has been working as a casting director for the show since 1989. He has won ten Daytime Emmy Awards for casting. In his chat with Benard, he discusses his unique ability to communicate with actors, encouraging them to deliver their best performances and he shares insight into his casting of Vanessa Marcil (Brenda Barrett), Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) and Michael Sutton (Stone Cates). He also talked about the younger generation‘s outlet of being able to showcase their talent on platforms like TikTok and Youtube and shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent.
What really stood out in the conversation for us was his casting of Marcil who almost walked out of her audition. Benard and Marcil played the iconic supercouple, Brenda and Sonny. Teschner noted, “You guys were great together. It was magic,” Teschner raved. “Vanessa was very raw but there was just something, this star quality, this presence, this beauty, the soulfulness, she was complex… it was everything.” He also explained, “When auditioning a contract role, I’ll see anywhere from 200 to 800 people. You average about 40-45 actors a day, and I spread it out so it’s not a cattle call.
Vanessa Marcil Was Ready To Leave Her Interview
So you might have three or four actors sitting in the [waiting] room then I bring each one in and they read with me in my office, opposite me. Vanessa was looking around the room and she thought, ‘These women are so beautiful, I’m never going to get this.’ She got up to leave. And as she was leaving, I opened the door and said, ‘Vanessa’ and she said she looked at me and knew she was going to get the role.”
