The daytime legend shared his thoughts in an Instagram video: “When I was young I would never in a million years think that I was gonna be an actor. At all. I thought actors came from the sky. And if you told me I was gonna write a book, there’s no way I’d ever… I didn’t think I was capable of it. Thank you, [co-writer] Sue Black. And then to win an award for a book… man, feels like I died and went to heaven.”

According to Soaps In Depth, “The Christopher Awards originated in 1949 to recognize the work of writers, producers, directors, authors, and illustrators whose work, “affirms the highest values of the human spirit,” and reflects the organization’s motto: “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Prizes are awarded in categories like television, cable, streaming, feature films, and books. Benard’s tome won in the Books for Adults category.”

As a mental health advocate, he has shared his own journey with bipolar disorder. Maurice debuted in the daytime as Nico on ABC soap All My Children in 1987 and he joined GH in 1993. His character, Sonny Corinthos, is a daytime legend.

He routinely uses his celebrity platform to shine a light on mental health issues and he has a YouTube show called the State of Mind, in which he talks about mental health issues with others including his GH costars.
