General Hospital star Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) didn’t do a new interview on State of Mind in the past week, possibly because he was at the GH Graceland fan event, but he did repost a clip from an old interview with James Patrick Stuart (Valentin Cassadine).

The Segment Is Still Valid

Daytime soap fans love learning about the person behind the character, and they learned during the State of Mind interview that he has a story of vulnerability, struggled with anxiety, and also battled addiction.

Maurice Benard drew out Stuart, who elaborated on how rock-and-roll culture led him to experiment with substances. He hit rock bottom, but he also managed to find a way back through acts of service.

Coping Mechanisms

James Patrick Stuart explained how he grew up when his dad was part of the rock-and-roll scene, and at the time, substances were treated as casual recreation, rather than as a red flag.

He said, “My father was in rock and roll. He was part of the British invasion right, so weed and alcohol was just a given. That was just part of life, right? So when anxiety showed up, well, pot and alcohol took care of that.”

Unlike recreational users, Stuart noted thathis early experimentation was tied to his escalating anxiety that often manifested as anger and isolation as a teen.

What started off feeling good with “the planets all lined up” eventually spiraled into a dependency.

When the GH star was working in New York, the facade had begun to crack. Stuart admitted, “I traded one reality for another… before you know it, you’re hanging out with guys that you just wouldn’t introduce to anybody.”

Hitting Rock Bottom

The consequences eventually caught up with him. Stuart reached a point where he was unemployable, and personal relationships fell apart because he was “no longer a safe bet.”

He said, “The only person who loved me was my mom,” but he had one of those “come-to-Jesus moments where it was just like, this ain’t working.”

The Turning Point Act

Interestingly, recovery wasn’t instant and it started quietly one day when he was at his brother’s home. There, he discovered self-help books and one day, while thinking they seemed very clinical, he looked out the window and spotted a rake.

He told Maurice Benard, “I walked outside and I said, ‘I’m going to rake his lawn.'”

James Patrick Stuart elaborated, saying, “Until that moment it had always been about me, my career… and I just raked his lawn and I started to feel the hole inside me at 25, 26, however old I was, start to shrink.”

From there, James stepped outside of himself and started reaching out to other people. And in doing that, he managed to break that terrible feeling of isolation. The GH star said, “It had never even occurred to me… I want to help somebody else.”

Giving Back Today

Maurice Benard and James agreed that helping others often helps people deal with their own mental health issues. And they don’t need to be massive projects, either. Sometimes, simple things work well.

Addiction didn’t help take away the feelings of being isolated, and James described it as living on the “dark side of the moon.”

Fans React

In the comments section, even though the interview was from 2021, General Hospital fans appreciated the discussion. One of them wrote, “What an amazing testimony! Thanks for sharing this James and Maurice.”

Another follower discussed addictive substances. They said, “I would like to add. You know back when pot was different. Nowadays some of the pot will send you straight into an anxiety attack. I thank you both for being honest & sharing what you’ve gone through.”
