Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) ended up shooting him during an explosive confrontation on the Thursday, July 6 episode.
Now, actor Andrew Hawkes revealed to Soap Opera Digest (SOD) how he found out his character’s run was over.
Andrew Hawkes’ Discovery
Hawkes reveals to SOD that a trip to wardrobe was when he realized that Cullum was a goner.
He was brought in for a suit fitting. When he came in, the team was sewing in squibs, which are sealed fake blood pouches used for gunshot wounds.
After a week, he still hadn’t heard any word on Cullum’s exit.
Hawkes states that General Hospital Executive Producer Frank Valentini then said to him, “You know what’s going on, right?” This is when Hawkes replied, “Yeah.”
Valentini replied that it was happening on May 18, which ended up being Hawkes’ last day on the show.
Cullum tells SOD that he did feel relieved after Joss shot Cullum.
The actor stated, “I was like, ‘Okay, they put a bullet in me, and now I’m done for the day!’” Cullum notes that he had to lie on the ground ‘dead’ as they shot some scenes, and he almost fell asleep.
He added, “… my mind kept thinking about all the people at the show who made this whole experience for me … I was kind of just going through everyone, and I was probably radiating a little love.”
That’s A Wrap!
Hawkes also told SOD that after filming wrapped up, he immediately approached Valentini.
The actor noted that, “Frank, along with Mark Teschner and Lisa Booth in casting, gave me an incredible role, an incredible experience, and I just really wanted to thank him for taking a chance on me.”
Valentini also offered complimentary words to Hawkes that were nice and made the actor feel good about the work he had done on the ABC soap.
Valentini also told SOD, “We love Andrew,” he says. “He has been the perfect bad guy, and we wish him nothing but the best.”
