General Hospital spoilers and updates reveal Maurice Benard has portrayed Sonny Corinthos on the ABC soap for many years.

Lately, there have been rumors about the actor possibly departing from Port Charles-he recently shared insights about his journey on the soap and his future aspirations during a podcast appearance.

Maurice Has Played Sonny Since 1993

Benard initially gained experience in the soap opera industry by portraying Nico Kelly on All My Children from 1987 to 1989.

However, his significant breakthrough arrived in 1993 when he took on the character of Sonny Corinthos in General Hospital. Although it was meant to be a six-month stint, Benard ended up playing the role for many years.

He also made appearances as Sonny in various spin-offs, including several episodes of Port Charles. In addition to his acting career, he is recognized for his podcast “State of Mind,” where he frequently engages in conversations with fellow soap stars.

Recently, fans had the opportunity to see Benard featured on yet another podcast;  the talented actor made an appearance on Richard Taite’s podcast titled “We’re Out of Time.” During this engaging session, Benard took the time to address the swirling rumors regarding the potential end of his tenure on the ABC soap.

He confidently reassured his fans, stating, “No, I’m not leaving,” effectively putting those unfounded rumors to rest.

He went on to elaborate, mentioning that he has been the target of such speculation for quite some time. As he candidly shared, “There have always been a lot of people saying that, I think they’re saying I’m dying, too, like I have cancer or something.”

Does Maurice Have Any Plans For Sonny’s Eventual Exit From Port Charles?

Although every journey eventually reaches its conclusion, Benard has reassured fans that Sonny will continue to be a part of the show for the foreseeable future.

He elaborated that his contract still has a full “year left” to run; furthermore, he expressed that he has no immediate plans to exit the soap opera world. Benard remarked, “Look, I’m going to retire, but I don’t think it’s going to be before I’m 65.”

In response to the swirling rumors, Benard mentioned that he doesn’t let such chatter affect him too much; he stated, “Let people say what they say.” Additionally, he acknowledged that he won’t remain on the show indefinitely, as the demands of working on a soap can be quite “mentally taxing.”

What Might He Do After Retirement?

The actor reflected on his future plans following his departure from the show, mentioning, “When I leave, I’ll have my podcast, State of Mind, and perhaps I’ll focus on that more extensively.” Nevertheless, both he and the host recognized that a bit of “structure” is essential in life. Benard further elaborated, “Financially, I’m in a good place, but you’re absolutely right”.
