General Hospital’s Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) has undergone some significant changes since his return from being held captive by Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), and it’s not just his new face.
When a mystery man first came to Port Charles, he didn’t know who he was, but then believed he was Jason Morgan (Steve Burton). It turned out he was Drew Cain, ex-Navy Seal and long-lost twin of Jason.
Billy Miller originally played Drew but the character came back to GH with Mathison playing the role. Some fans are up in arms about the direction the character has taken.
General Hospital: Would The Old Drew Fall In Love With Carly?
The coupling between Drew and Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) would never have happened in the past. Back then, Carly was married to Sonny Corintos (Maurice Benard) but it was much more than that.
Sonny and his wife had no interest in Drew once they realized he wasn’t Jason. He had walked away from Sonny’s organization to run Aurora Media. While the Corinthos’ said they respected his decision, their friendship became almost non-existent. The old Jason was back as Sonny’s enforcer and all was right with their world. Carly and Drew just didn’t mesh years ago.
Not only did these two become a couple, but the ex-Navy Seal also became his girlfriend’s savior. His purpose in life is to rescue Carly from whatever mess she gets herself into. This now has him going off to prison.
Is Drew Cain A Terrible Father?
When he was being held captive, all Drew thought about was his daughter, Scout (Cosette Abinante). He would do anything to get back to her, and he even scratched her name onto the wall of his cell to keep him going.
Now he is back in Port Charles. At first, Scout barely remembered her dad, but they bonded quickly as father and daughter.
Carly and Drew were both arrested for insider trading. Yes, the evil Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) turned them in, but Carly was guilty of buying Aurora stock with insider information. Her boyfriend was the one who decided to take the fall.
He reasoned that Scout will be fine with her mom, Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), and her live-in boyfriend, Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna). On the other hand, Carly’s daughter Donna (Scarlett Spears) would suffer greatly with Sonny and his fiance Nina.
Drew is off to prison, much to the chagrin of Sam. How could he leave his daughter after what they all suffered when he was away the first time? Never mind the fact that he took a whole five minutes to explain things to Scout before sending her off to look at flowers and then spending his final days with Carly.
The old Drew would never do this. He was devastated when he lost his son, Oscar Nero (Garren Stitt) to cancer. He would not choose to now leave his remaining child.
Fans React To The New Drew
General Hospital fans are fierce and loyal. They miss the Billy Miller version of this character and it is not because of Cameron Mathison’s acting. They feel this way due to the direction the writers took with Drew.
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their feelings on the subject.
“This is not Drew Cain. I want Carly & Drew to do time & for this all to blow up in their smug faces,” said one user.
Another added, “I don’t know who this goofball is but he’s definitely not Drew Cain. And the forced pairing with Carly is only making it worse. Billy Miller’s Drew had no romantic feelings for Carly. I guess you thought we’ve forgotten about that but many of us haven’t.”
Stay tuned to General Hospital to see what happens next.
