General Hospital (GH) star Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) got a lot of support from Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) ahead of the Daytime Emmys this year, but allegedly, his ex-wife Sheree wouldn’t allow him to have the support of his daughter Brooklyn. Now, ABC fans seem divided over whether she made the right call or not.

The Emmy Drama

According to TMZ, Burton wanted to use one of his visitation days to take Brooklyn, 12, to the Emmy Awards. He’d been nominated and hoped to spend the special event with her.

Sheree Gustin apparently put her foot down, saying, “I don’t want Brooklyn anywhere near Hollywood or that scene. You plaster her on social media and People magazine enough. Absolutely not.”

Court Texts

The text messages, according to the outlet, formed part of court documents that they were able to view. It seems that Steve Burton wanted to swap out one day, take his daughter with him, and then return her the next day.

In his proposal, he allegedly said, “I would like Brook there. Let me know. Thanks. I would pick her up Friday morning and take her back Saturday… It’s a once-in-a-lifetime. I’ll be happy to swap days.”

Things Deteriorated

Well, once-in-a-lifetime or not, it didn’t cut it for Sheree, who lcoked down agaunt the idea, per Celeb Dirty Laundy.

Things took a turn south when the General Hospital star showed his irritation, noting that his ex-wife was “perfectly comfortable with the lifestyle that came from my career in that world. And even now, your whole business is built from social media, which includes Brooklyn a lot.”

Apparently, that’s when Sheree stopped discussing the proposed Emmy event.

It’s not clear to GH fans what the custody rights are, but some folks had some ideas, and a surprising number of fans agreed that Sheree was right to keep Brooklyn clear of the Hollywood crowd.

Fans React

When the outlet shared their article on Instagram on October 31,  one follower wrote, “She’s a good Mom,” and another one said, “I don’t blame her!”

Daytime soap fans take all of this sort of thing very seriously, and others felt it was entirely wrong to deny Steve the pleasure of his daughter’s company on a special night. Here’s what some of them said about it:

  • “Yes, every right to take his daughter to the Emmys. He’s the father of his daughter. That is such a special moment. Sorry Steve, that you’re going through that she’s the one who made a mistake and got pregnant by another man you have every right to be with your daughter every right.”
  • “It’s not about her and by the way Steve doesn’t need her permission. Steve if it’s on ur time with ur children you don’t need permission or share what ur plans are with ur children unfortunately if it’s her time she can say no if ur asking during her time.”
  • “They both need to decide together responsibly without drama. He wants her there because he was nominated. It’s understandable.”

Your Thoughts

What are your thoughts? Do you agree that Sheree is right to keep Brooklyn away from the cameras and the gossip that comes with Hollywood life? Or, do you think that Steve Burton had a point about wanting to share his special day with his daughter?
