Victor Cassadine has been a fixture on General Hospital since 1981. With the popular daytime drama having begun in 1963, the character has been with the show 41 out of its 58-year run. Though Victor has not been without complications, having been thought dead on more than one occasion, fans know he’s a tough one to take out.
Victor Cassadine is one of the more villainous characters on General Hospital and a useful commodity for the popular drama.
Victor Cassadine’s Long Run on ‘General Hospital’
Initially, the Victor Cassadine character was portrayed by Thaao Penghlis who eventually reprised the role in 2014.
In one of the more memorable General Hospital episodes, Victor and his brothers, Mikkos and Tony steal the Ice Princess diamond and had planned to use it to power a machine that would, according to Soaps in Depth, freeze the world.
Fans may recall that Laura and Robert thwarted the attempt after traveling to Cassadine Island and Victor’s brothers were killed.
Victor, on the other hand, was arrested and fans were later led to believe that he had been murdered while in prison.
Thaao Penghlis’ Portrayal of Victor Cassadine
Then, on December 9, 2013, it was announced that Thaao Penghlis would be returning in January of the following year to reprise the role of Victor.
Though Victor was only back for a couple of months, Penghlis announced on Twitter that he would be returning again, tweeting, “I just was asked back on GH the 31st. So happy to announce. Oh what disturbances & romance will be taking place. Hullo Spencer.”
After returning for one episode in May of 2014, Penghlis returned again from August 7 to August 12, 2014.
The long-time General Hospital cast member returned again, for a spell, in September 2014 for another short period when his character was, again, presumably killed off.
New Reprisal of Victor Cassadine
Fast forward a little bit to September of 2021 and actor Charles Shaughnessy, who previously filled the role of Alistair Durban in 1984, is brought in to reprise the role of Victor Cassadine.
On September 7, 2021, Shaughnessy announced that he would be filling the role for at least the next six months.
