Maurice Bernard (Sonny Corithos) from ABC’s General Hospital, (GH) explained on his State of Mind podcast recently, that his guest was highly qualified. Suzette Glasner, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist with a long list of achievements on her resume. She was there to answer some questions about mental health.

A Special Guest On The Podcast

On Sunday, March 23, Maurice opened his podcast by saying that he has a lot of guests on his podcast. However, he doesn’t get in the experts as often as he’d like to. So, Suzette was there to answer questions that might help others learn a bit more. He reminded his followers that she’s “been here before [and] she’s back again because she just knows her stuff.”

A long story arrived from Maurice about an experience he had. First, he explained that he wasn’t too sure about anxiety at one stage. He said, “I didn’t know what anxiety was or felt like till I was in my 30s because everything before that was bipolar.”

The GH star continued by relating how he’d had a big week and a lot of pressure on General Hospital. Anyway, a producer wanted to meet him, and he had to fly. Bad things happened because he discovered at the airport that he hadn’t brought his passport which he needed to get into Canada. So, that was canceled.

More Stress

Then, he ended up needing to appear “in Pittsburg.” But, he couldn’t get on the flight. But, his friend explained that he was “Sonny [Corinthos]” from GH, so someone made things happen. They finally boarded, and he felt stressed. But then, a guy confronted them for being “special.” Unsettled by it, he tried for a nap, but it took ages to get in the air.

Feeling off, Maurice Benard thought he was having a “nervous breakdown” as he kept falling asleep. The ABC star explained, “Then, I woke up and I felt like I needed to take all my clothes off and get off this plane but we’re in the air now so I had to deal with that. That’s my beginning with anxiety.”

What did Dr. Suzette Say?

The doctor explained that “anxiety has a purpose for us.” While it doesn’t feel nice, it can help people deal with hard situations. It gives them an edge to get the job done right. And, it’s part of the “fright…or flight response.” When danger comes along, our bodies respond to that in many ways. She talked about the confrontation on the flight and said, “[Anxiety will] … kick up your heart rate.”

More information came, and Maurice listened as the doctor explained that the nervous system is “designed to do…things” in the face of danger, but it can get “triggered anytime you perceive in your mind that there’s a threat or a danger.” Sometimes, humans can get a “misfire” from the brain which signals “danger…but there isn’t any.”

Offering A Solution?

The guest on Maurice Benard’s podcast offered a tip for when anxiety or panic threatens. She suggested something called, “The sober breathing exercise.” Plenty more happened in the podcast, too much to show here. So, you can watch it here to learn more about anxiety and how to cope with it.
