General Hospital Starts The New Year With (Many) Blasts From The Past

General Hospital dug way deep down into its history to start 2022 off right and it wasn’t all about the familiar characters that were on our screen. Instead, it all started with a set.

General Hospital Resurrects Sonny’s Penthouse

Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) took Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) where he wanted to go and rather than him choosing one of his many cabins on the outskirts of town, he chose a place we haven’t seen in years on end — his old penthouse.

As soon as we saw Sonny drinking away, we thought, “No, it couldn’t be…” But, it was and Sonny even told us so. Yes, he said he bought the place back in 1994 when it was really 1995, but why split hairs here? (The Brenda wire scene we will never, ever forget happened in 1995 and Sonny still lived above Luke’s Place at the time, which was once The Paradise Lounge, and is now The Jerome Gallery.)

Bringing out that old relic of a set (updated, kind of, of course) and Sonny telling the story of Stone (Michael Sutton) to Nina was a brilliant way to remember the show’s history as Sonny becomes more like the man who lived in that penthouse all those years ago.

Old Favorites Together Again

The Savoy was the place to be for the very first GH episode of 2022 if you wanted to see some of the best ladies to ever grace our Port Charles screens. Somehow we got Laura Collins (Genie Francis), Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner), and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) all in one room. How could we ever get so lucky? And they are ready to work together to find the baby Maxie (Kirsten Storms) hid in plain sight — and bring down Peter August (Wes Ramsey). What could be better?

Well, Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliott), of course. When she showed up at Laura’s door at the end of the hour, it was a thrill from way back. And she even has Tracy’s 1970s hairstyle, albeit with a bit more gray. So what if she was there to announce Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) is dead. We know he can’t REALLY be dead, so bring on some Tracy and Monica, and this will be quite the Port Charles year. Stay tuned to General Hospital to see how these stories play out.

Elizabeth Rose: Elizabeth Rose has spent most of her long adult life writing about soaps off and on. She grew up on long-departed soaps Another World, Santa Barbara, All My Children, One Life to Live, and Guiding Light. Since college she has been a General Hospital lover and considers herself to be an encyclopedia of everything daytime.
