General Hospital Star Laura Wright Talks Daytime Emmy Nomination

General Hospital star Laura Wright has already picked up one Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress for playing Carly Corinthos in 2011 and she is up for another one this year.

General Hospital’s Laura Wright Has Friendly Competition

In 2022, the actresses who play mortal enemies Carly Corinthos and Nina Reeves are competing against one another in the lead actress category. However, Wright and Cynthia Watros are old friends from their Guiding Light days in the 1990s when Wright played Cassie Layne and Watros played crazy Annie Dutton. When Wright learned she had been nominated, she was thrilled to see who she was nominated with.

“It was a big year for Carly,” Wright told Soap Opera Digest. So, it felt good, and then to be nominated with Cynthia, who I spent the year working with, is just icing on the cake, truly.”

The actress celebrated her Emmy nod by texting Watros, and Kelly Thiebaud, who is nominated in the supporting actress category. “I was beyond thrilled to hear that Kelly was nominated and I am screaming and yelling and rooting for her.”

Wright also heard from another GL co-star from yesteryear who has a few Emmys herself, Kim Zimmer, who played Cassie’s big sister, Reva Shayne, on the defunct CBS soap.

What Laura Wright Put On Her Reel

Anyone who knows the Daytime Emmys knows what an actor chooses for their Emmy reel can make all the difference when voting time comes. For Wright, she carefully chose scenes from Carly’s extremely dramatic and surprising year.

“I used the scene where Carly talks about Sonny not being there anymore to make her coffee. I knew those were going on my reel before they even aired,” Wright told Soap Opera Digest. “The other scenes I used were finding out from Maxie that Nina knew [Sonny was alive] the whole time and a lovely scene with Epiphany where she’s talking about Jason.”

In 2021, Wright got to show anger, love, regret, and grief, and like a typical Carly, she didn’t hold back at all whenever Carly felt someone wronged her. The soap vet who got her start as Allie Rescott on Loving and The City back in the early 1990s, says she doesn’t typically prepare a speech, but she still hopes she doesn’t pronounce anyone’s names wrong if she is up there giving her thanks.

Tune into the Daytime Emmys on Friday, June 24, 2022, at 9 PM EST on CBS to see who takes home the gold.
