General Hospital (GH) fans love the ABC daytime supercouples, and this weekend, Rosabel Rosalind Kurth shared a personal project that looked at the on and off-screen romance of her parents, Rena Sofer and Wally Kurth. Notably, her post proved that sometimes, real life tells a more complicated story. Read on to find out more.
History Behind The Post
Back in 1993, Sofer joined GH as Lois Cerullo, opposite Kurth’s Ned Ashton, also known as Eddie Maine. ABC fans might remember that their characters fell in love. And in real life, they did as well.
Off-screen, their whirlwind romance flew by, and later, the writers brought in Rena’s pregnancy to the storyline. But sadly, the relationship off-screen didn’t last. Rena Sofer and Wally Kurth divorced after she left General Hospital to welcome baby Rosabel.
In an Instagram post, Rosabel Rosalind Kurth reflected on the history of her mom and dad. Mostly, she seemed interested in the parallels in the world of soaps and actual life. She said, “As Ned and Lois fell in love, so did Wally and Rena, following relationship milestones close behind the work of the script-writers.”
A Personal Project
Years after her mom and dad stopped working together on GH, something unexpected pushed Rosabel to take a closer look. When Sofer returned to GH in 2023 and filmed scenes again with Kurth, it touched Rosabel deeply. She said that watching them together again made her see things differently.
She described starting what she called a “years-long investigation of love and fantasy,” using her parents’ story as background. If you don’t know, Rosabel is a very talented artist. Thanks to a fan who sent her dad some old VHS tapes containing Ned and Lois scenes, she feels inspired by them.
Looking At The Past
In her long caption, Rosabel said that she already started watching the old tapes and plenty arrived to take away from the first five that cover about 12 and a half hours of the couple’s early storyline. GH fans from back then probably recall some of it, because they include parts of Rena and Wally’s first meeting and their honeymoon.
At the same time, Rosabel told her fans that she’s still figuring out what the project will become and how it might affect her relationships. She also shared that, from her perspective, her parents had minimal contact for many years after their divorce, making their recent on-screen reunion even more meaningful to watch.
Actually, that information seemed unusual and insightful because most research will describe her parents as being warm in their co-parenting relationship.
She wrote in her own words:
For 27 years my mom and my dad had minimal contact at best, tense contact at worst… until 2023 when Rena was recast to return as Lois on General Hospital to help Eddie (Ned) with identity recall after a bout of amnesia.
Mom Rena Seemed Very Supportive
In the comments, Sofer seemed so encouraging. She told Rosabel she feels “immensely proud” of her daughter and happy she can explore this history with both parents still there to guide her.
Fans seemed fascinated by the story because it helped them grasp the way time, distance, and reflection can change perspectives.
