Is General Hospital doomed? Ratings for the ABC daytime soap plunged again. This comes as fans complain about the new direction of the show. Keep on reading to learn more.
General Hospital Fears Cancellation Rumors
The daytime soap celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. The end of the special included an announcement from Steve Burton. He reprised his role of Jason Morgan. He was fired in 2021 after he refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
He claimed he couldn’t agree to the mandate due to religious reasons. Burton returned to Days of Our Lives for the first time in nearly two decades. He geared up his return to Port Charles behind the scenes.
GH fans aren’t impressed with Burton’s return. They’re also not happy with the new writers who are responsible for the current storylines. They noticed a return to the mob boss stories that made them lose interest years ago. It’s mostly focused on Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and his mental breakdown.
ABC Soap Faces Cancellation Rumors?
Ratings for General Hospital continue to decline. In January 2024, the show fired head writers Dan O’Connor and Chris Van Etten. They promoted Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey as co-head writers.
There’s another shakeup with the writing team. Mulcahey will no longer serve as the head writer. The position will go to Korte. General Hospital fans reacted to the news on X, formerly Twitter. Most fear that the soap could be headed for a cancellation.
“Patrick wasn’t the problem. It’s the EP Frank V that needs to go!” one fan demanded.
“Bad move. Korte and EP are still there, so the poor storytelling will continue. They didn’t even give Patrick a chance to turn things around,” another user argued.
Meanwhile, there have been complaints about the writers on the SoapCentral.com Message Boards. Some GH fans want to know what they’re trying to do with Sonny’s storyline. He’s the punching bag of Port Charles. Fans would love to know if he will eventually get arrested.
“I have no idea where this is going anymore, but it’s beyond ready for a push forward or a conclusion of some sort,” one fan responded.
“Eitiher put him in Ferncliff like they did with Sasha and hold him accountable for the violence like they did when Sasha stabbed Coby…” another fan wrote.

Sonny’s med story is worn out. I know it is a continues hassel to keep him healthy. Nina getting revenge on everyone is tiresom. Someone decided to give the Davis girls a story and they are NOT interesting either. Everyone was excited for the return of Jason—–when will that happen???? He is only on the screen for about 5 minutes at a time
I love general people stop complaining cause if they cancel general there will be nothing left to watch cant make everybody happy

I’ve been watching 50 Years!! Do Not Cancel GH!! Always a time when ratings come down. It will turn around. We don’t need another talk show! To many on the stations now. Same people jumping show to show to promote either a movie or a book. At least on GH stories start and end. Then jump to new ones keeps us watching !!!

I honestly don’t understand why these writers are ruining GH with this ridiculous Sonny storyline with medication yet again. This ALL needs to come to a head immediately. It’s boring and too violent watching Sonny first beat to a pulp a horrible older man, Cyrus in January, and now Dex. Let’s get the Pikeman story ended and get back to the business of GH. I’ve been watching almost since the beginning of this Soap, and it;s just so sad to see what it’s become. Sorry but I’m no fan of “Natalia” either with or without Sonny. Time to fix this soap by giving the fans what they deserve; Jason, Sonny and Carly along with Sam.
I hope Ava gets caught by Sonny or Carly. I’d like to see Sonny, Carly and Jason all back together again.

My mom has been watching General Hospital ever since it aired and she never missed an episode if she had to work she would watch it when she got home .She is 89 years old and she is watching to this day and I have been watching it as long as I can remember and I’m fixing to be 58 years old & she waits everyday for 1pm to get here so she can watch General Hospital. It makes her day. I hope General Hospital don’t get cancel. they need to but the people who was writing the show that was giving them the good ratings back to again .
