General Hospital Co-Head Writers Explain Why Drew Cain Was Made A Villain
General Hospital spoilers remind fans that Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) is as dastardly as a character can get. That said, he once was a hero, who transformed into a villain after his prison stint for insider trading in 2023.
But why did the show decide to turn Drew into a ‘bad guy’? General Hospital’s co-Head Writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten recently offered an explanation.
The Quartermaine Factor
Van Etten and Korte spoke with Soap Opera Digest (SOD) about the reasoning behind Drew’s transition for zero to hero.
Van Etten stated that the Quartermaine family thrives on conflict, and in the past, fans could find the triggers of drama coming from Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot), A.J.
Quartermaine (Sean Kanan), and Edward Quartermaine (John Ingle). Still, Edward and A.J. have long passed away, and Tracy has stepped up to become the head of the family, with the role of “black sheep” up for grabs.
Van Etten goes on to tell SOD, “Drew, to me, seemed positioned best, as a newcomer to the family and as a relative outsider within it — and with a really blank slate of a past — to step into the role as an antagonist, or an adversary from within.”
Korte added that the current generation of Qs needed an A.J. She also believed that stealing Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen), the wife of his nephew, Michael Corinthos’s (Rory Gibson), helped cement his villainhood.
No Stopping Drew Cain
It appears that there’s no slowing down Drew’s villainhood and no road to redemption on the horizon. After all, if being shot twice in the back and then being locked in a paralytic state didn’t humble the man and set him straight, nothing will!
In fact, Drew seems to be doubling down with his evil doings! He’s not only pairing up with Ava Jerome (Maura West) to frame Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) for the Pentonville attack on Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner) but also setting Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) up for the disappearance of Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna).
There’s no slowing Drew down, so what will he be up to next?
