General Hospital (GH) news shows that the ABC soap is one of just three currently on the network airwaves. That’s a steep decline from the genre’s heyday when love in the afternoon dominated all three networks for much of the day.
The good news is that a new soap, Beyond the Gates, debuts this month and hopefully stokes ratings across the board. Since General Hospital debuted in 1963 generations of watchers have faithfully followed the trial and triumphs of families like the Quartermaines and the Spencers.
But the ratings are concerning.
General Hospital Could get Canceled in 2025?
Despite a dedicated fanbase over the years, GH’s ratings have dropped to new lows and as such the show could be on the chopping block. Then again, there is no indication that the show will be cut, but fans worry about the possibility of losing their favorite show.
It would be a shame if General Hospital is canceled after 62 years on the air, but anything is possible. Just ask Ellen.
What is Going On With GH and Ratings?
ABC has not released a statement about General Hospital being canceled in 2025 so that is good news. But if you peek behind the curtain a bit further, there is a worrying trend of dwindling ratings and viewership.
According to Yahoo! “The show had just 1.8 million viewers between May 6 and May 10, 2024, making it the fourth consecutive week where General Hospital fell below the 2 million viewership mark.”
It might help if GH partnered with a streaming platform, like Days of our Lives does with Peacock, but so far has shown no interest in doing so.
Will GH be Cancelled?
The show has displeased fans in recent times with sudden cast changes, notably the departure of Kelly Monaco as Sam McCall. The actress herself was bewildered at the hasty write-off which led fans to start a Change.org petition to bring her back.
So, you can see that there are few dark cloud circling the show which makes some fans wonder about the soap’s future.
Maybe the execs should listen to fans who have plenty to suggest with one posting: “They need someone like Gloria Monty to take the helm of GH. Back when she ran the show, she made it one of the best shows on TV. Celebrities like Liz Taylor wanted to be on a daytime soap.”
Another wrote “Do something to keep the older crew, make them know they are the favorites who bring in the viewing. Get rid of your current writers. Who drag out a storyline. I have been watching for 60 plus years!”
And fan opined: “My older siblings watched GH and as we only had one TV, I started watching it in the early 1970s and have continued watching it still today. Not happy with some of the story lines such as; Drew and Willow, Jason claiming to be the father, Lulu’s only priority is Charlotte … Overall, I still look forward to watching it every day though and hope some of the story lines get better.”

Cameron Matheson is a fabulous actor. And youre not supposed to like Drew and Willow anymore than we liked Rick and Monica back in the day. The point is to keep the story interesting. Ratings usually climb when things go wrong and people end up with someone the audience doesnt like. Its scandals and shakeups that drive rating.
In 1978 when Laura married Scotty they were the darlings of daytime. They helped GH go from possible cancellation to number 2 in the ratings. Then boom Luke raped Laura, she fell for him and they went on the run to save PC from the mob. No one saw that coming a year earlier and it was a huge scandal and controversy that still divides viewers today over 40 years later! Scandal and adultery on soaps is good. Of course you dont like it. But again youre not supposed to like it!

I love General Hospital and such a good show. Please do not get rid of it. They just need to come up with a better storylines. Get rid of Drew and get rid of Emma. They’re annoying.

You guys always had good storylines about real stuff I think GH was the first soap to bring up HIV . Those were real stories not all these villains breaking in and out of prison ETC.
I have watched GH since it started in the 60s. Have always looked forward to every week day afternoon to see what was happening in Port Chuck! It is and always will be my number one and only favorite soap opera! I agree, GH was at its best when it covered real life issues. Really enjoyed the Gloria Monty years with the Fab Four, Luke, Laura, Robert, and Anna.

ever since the writers strike ended GH has gotten the worst new writers ever and they are destroying this fantastic soap. maybe they need to start firing writers and bringing back writers who actually loved their jobs and GH. stop destroying something we all love and I don’t care for another soap is on GH will always be my #1 no matter what ‼️
