General Hospital (GH) star Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) takes a temporary hiatus from the ABC daytime soap. While he previously reassured fans that his departure isn’t permanent, his latest social media activity might reveal more to the story. Read on to find out more.
A Dive Into Contentment
Steve Burton, apart from acting as Jason Morgan, also often posts motivational reels. And this weekend, he did another one. However, he seemed rather more philosophical. Was there something more personal behind it?
In his Instagram reel, the GH star admitted that his mind recently turned to the theme of contentment.
“I was gonna post today about contentment,” he began. Then, he challenged his followers, suggesting they look inside themselves. He asked them, “Are you truly content in life, or are you content because you don’t believe more is possible?”
Redefining Happiness
Steve, who recently married Michelle Lundstrom, explained that he spent time looking up the literal definitions of the words we use to describe our emotional states. However, the dictionary didn’t quite match his reality.
“So I looked up contentment, and it says the definition is a state of happiness or satisfaction,” Steve noted. Next, he did the same with the word “happy.” But, he found himself disagreeing with it. So, he shared his take on the difference between a lasting state of well-being and fleeting emotions.
Steve Burton explained:
So with that line of thought, happiness equals contentment, but I’m not sure I really believe that. I always feel that happiness is fleeting. You’re not happy all the time. It’s a feeling that you get, but I wouldn’t say it’s the same as contentment.
Playing To Win
While some fans might speculate he talked about the challenges of balancing a new marriage with a high-profile career, Steve Burton did send a message to his General Hospital followers as well. He said that folks should shift their mindsets, adding they should stop “settling” for a life that’s just “okay.”
Admitting that he rambled on a bit, Steve then asked, “Are you going through life playing not to lose, or are you going through life playing to win?” Then, he wound it up by saying, “If you’re playing not to lose, then maybe you’re just settling in life, and there’s no reason to settle.”
Fans React
Probably, because of Steve Burton’s recent stepping away from GH, each post gets close eyeballs on it by ABC soap fans. While some people enjoyed the inspirational message, others worry it hints at a restless spirit.
One follower commented, “Love the message, Steve! But please don’t ‘play to win’ by staying away from Port Charles too long! We miss Jason already.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion area:
- I needed to hear this today. Happiness is fleeting but peace is permanent. Enjoy your hiatus with Michelle!
- Is everything okay? This feels like a very deep post for a Sunday morning. Sending love to you and the family.
- Don’t settle for anything less than greatness. You’ve always played to win, Steve. Can’t wait for the summer return!
- Interesting timing for this post… sounds like a lot of soul searching is happening during this time off.
The Hiatus From Port Charles
The main reason Steve Burton gave for his break from General Hospital focused on his need to spend quality time with his new wife.
However, given the heavy nature of his recent “ramblings,” some fans feel concerned. Why is that? Well, they wonder if the second marriage in his life might be more complex than expected.
Still Committed To Fans
Notably, the man who brings Jason Morgan to life always seemed like an open book with his personal growth. Is he dealing with the reality of post-honeymoon life?
Or, is he simply pondering the “fleeting” nature of happiness? Either way, he still seems committed to his fans. And, hopefully to a return to the ABC soap in summer this year.

I think what ever Steve Burton decides is his business. He just remarried and has a beautiful wife ( inside and out) and they deserve to enjoy life and their privacy. They also have a blended family between Steve’s 3 kids and Michelle’s 2 daughters. 3 of the 5 are under 18. It’s got to be a lot for these kids to navigate. I have been a GH fan since it started and have come to see many people come and go. I have always loved Steve Burton as Jason and was really happy when he returned after COVID and disappointed that he is going on a break. Whether he comes back or not is his and his families’ decision … he owes us nothing. Yes he will definitely be missed and life goes on. He and Michelle deserve to do what’s Best for them. ❤️
