Long before daytime, Harrison starred on the small screen in Trapper John, M.D. and from the outside it looked like the talented and handsome actor was living the dream. But in his words, nightmare was more like it.
At the time his successful career included multiple acting gigs plus running his own production company. But because of addiction: “I didn’t grow. All growth stopped.”

Harrison added that he “was busy using all my acting skills to disguise my addiction instead of building my career.”
“I could act, but I wasn’t doing as good as I should have been doing … I was just persevering — pouring massive amounts of energy into enduring my addiction — not into the creative artist that I was inspired to be. And then I found my way back.”
How did Harrison break the cycle that suffocated his spirit? He checked himself into the world-famous Betty Ford Center and did the hard work necessary to get “back in touch with myself through my sobriety after a few years of hard work.”
GH Spoilers: Gregory Harrison Gets Real
Harrison recalls that the last 35 years have been his best after he almost died and lost everything including his health and marriage. About his past addiction, Harrison is proud that he is a “better husband, a better father, a better friend, a better actor, and a better human being for having survived that. And there are a lot of friends who I started doing blow with who didn’t live…who died.”
Harrison and Benard have an extraordinary chat, with the former talking about growing up on Catalina Island, being drafted during the Vietnam War, growing up Mormon, losing his religion, and his marriage to actress Randi Oakes.
Onscreen Harrison’s character is battling ALS and Benard predicted that his co-star will earn a Daytime Emmy nomination in recognition of his stellar, heartbreaking work. Fans will definitely want to listen to this podcast, it is one of Benard’s best ever.
