General Hospital Spoilers: Kleenex Alert: The Deaths Of These GH Characters Broke Our Hearts

General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal from terminal illness to exploding cars, fans have grieved the loss of many GH characters. Their absences continue to leave a void in our hearts for years, and a true GH fan never really gives up hope we’ll see them again.

General Hospital Spoilers — Jasper Jacks

Even though Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) has since been returned to us, it almost goes without saying that his death decimated fans everywhere. Back in 2011, Jax was on the run from the police and decided to hop a plane out of town — flying it himself. Without waiting for air traffic control to even give him the green light, Jax took off, and shortly after — realizing Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) messed with his plane — came spiraling down. He was presumed dead until Skye Quartermaine (Robin Christopher) found him in a warehouse. For a while though, fans were lost without their favorite Aussie.

Emily Quartermaine

Some fans might argue that Emily Quartermaine (Natalia Livingston) is the element that remains missing for the Q household. She was the saccharine sweetness that pulled everyone else together when they were too dry and temperamental. She balanced out an otherwise unruly and pessimistic family. When fans thought they might lose her to breast cancer, they wept. Ultimately, it was Diego Alcazar (Ignacio Serricchio) who took Emily’s life in 2007 — strangling her in his plot for revenge against Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), who killed Diego’s father, Lorenzo Alcazar (Ted King).

Duke Lavery

Few love stories on General Hospital have carried us as far as Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) and Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan) did. Back in 2014, Duke found himself making friends with Sonny, and he went to great lengths to cover it up that Sonny killed A.J. Quartermaine (Sean Kanan). But when the truth came out in the wash, as it always does, Sonny agreed to confess as long as Duke went free. The two made a deal that Duke would take over at the helm of Sonny’s business. However, that threw him into a world of organized crime, competing against other mobsters, like Julian Jerome (William deVry). It was Julian who ordered Carlos Rivera (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) to kill Duke, and that’s just what happened in 2015, right before Duke was set to sail off into a happily ever after ending with Anna.

Tony Jones

When Tony Jones (Brad Maule) left GH in a hospital bed, fans could feel the collective heartbreak. Keep in mind, this was before the age of GH fan groups on Facebook. Still, you could feel it. Tony was such an integral part of the GH family, and having him perish to a plague felt cold and unfeeling, but his final words were that B.J. Jones (Brighton Hertford) was waiting for him on the other side making the moment we lost him more bearable.

B.J. Jones

Speaking of B.J. Jones, longtime fans still get choked up when Bobbie Spencer (Jaclyn Zeman) mentions her adopted daughter. Her storyline made a major impact on viewers when she was killed after a drunk driver collided with her school van. B.J.’s death miraculously coincided with Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) having a heart attack and needing a heart transplant, to which Tony — B.J.’s father — obliged and donated his child’s heart.

Morgan Corinthos

We still hear about Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Morgan) quite often. His death ripped the Corinthos family apart and broke the hearts of fans all over the world. In an explosion that was meant for his father, Sonny, Morgan was said to have met his untimely demise. The good news? There were no remains. We’re still waiting for a comeback.

Jake Spencer

There might not have ever been a more heated debate surrounding GH than the death of Jake Spencer (Hudson West). This death not only brought viewers to tears but they were angered by the plot holes they couldn’t ignore. In 2011, Jake was hit by a car and declared legally brain dead. His organs were donated to Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), who needed them due to cancer. Here comes the plot hole. Four years later, it is discovered that Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers) was somehow holding him captive the whole time and he was alive.

General Hospital Updates — Sonny’s Loves: Claudia Zacchara, Connie Falconeri, and Lily Corinthos

Sure, Claudia Zacchara (Sarah Joy Brown) was a “bad girl,” but she did it so well. When she and Sonny fell for one another, we were as down with it as we were when bad girl Carly came to town — ironically, then played by Sarah Joy Brown. Was it Claudia — or Sarah — that made us feel all that chemistry? We may never know. Claudia’s death by bludgeoning at the hands of Michael Corinthos may have been welcomed after all that she had done, but we still miss the sparks that flew between her and Sonny.

From time to time, we still hear Sonny talk about his love for Connie Falconeri (Megan Ward), and the blame he’s placed on others who he holds accountable for her death. Suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder and sharing her body with her alter, Kate, Connie died after being shot by Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West).

Lily Corinthos (Lilly Melgar) left Sonny’s side in 1996 after her father, Hernando Rivera (Ismael “East” Carlo), ordered a hit on Sonny. A car bomb meant for the mobster accidentally took Lily and his unborn child instead.

Kiki Jerome

When Kiki Jerome (Hayley Erin) was brutally slayed by psychopathic killer Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom), fans wept right alongside her love, Griffin Munro (Matt Cohen), and mother, Ava. The discovery of Kiki’s body aboard The Haunted Star was one of the most chilling moments in GH history, and an event we know will haunt (pun intended) Ava forever.

Georgie Jones

Diehard fans who’ve been tuning into GH since the nineties know this name all too well. No, it’s not Maxie’s daughter. It’s her little sister, Georgie Jones (Lindze Letherman), whom her daughter was later named after. Georgie was just as sweet and bubbly as her sister, albeit slightly less nosey and not as inclined to gossip (we know you don’t mean it that way, Maxie). Georgie was another life lost too soon when the Text Message Killer — who turned out to be Diego Alcazar (Ignacio Serricchio) — strangled her in the park and left her body to be found by Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson).

Julian Jerome

At Christmastime in 2020, Julian Jerome (William deVry) found himself a wanted man. Sonny had discovered he was working for Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober) and was determined to get Julian to turn himself into the PCPD. Julian had worked hard to turn his life around after his exit from the mob. He even bought Charlie’s Pub, and he thought he was going to have a future with Kim Nero (Tamara Braun), until Kim fell for her old flame, Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison). Faced with too much loss and backed into a corner by Renault, Julian fled Port Charles hoping to escape Sonny’s wrath, but he failed.

Courtney Matthews

We love it when new characters go on to keep former fan faves alive, and that’s just what Spencer Cassadine (Nichola Chavez) has done in keeping the memory of his mother, Courtney Matthews (Alicia Leigh Willis) in the forefront. Courtney succumbed to a viral illness during an epidemic just after Spencer was born in 2006, and truly remains a gone but not forgotten resident of Port Charles.

Stone Cates

There are some characters whose deaths still sting, because we know we’re really never going to see them again. Newcomers to GH may know him in name only, as a wing of the hospital became his namesake, but Stone Cates (Michael Sutton) was paramount to an AIDS storyline GH pushed in the early nineties when HIV was making headlines. He died of complications related to the illness in 1995, only six months after being diagnosed, and his story propelled national awareness of the need for early screening for HIV and better access to it.

Nathan West

Maxie fans never wanted her love story with hubby Nathan West (Ryan Paevey)to end the way it did, with her screaming his name after he was shot by Cesar Faison (Anders Hove).

GH Spoilers Indicates Jason Morgan

Of course, the most devastating death in GH history belongs to the character that pulls the most heartstrings with the longest record of making us love him. Jason Morgan’s (Steve Burton) presumed death as he was buried under the rubble inside an underground tunnel holds one of the top spots as the most heart-wrenching loss in Port Charles’ history. We continue to hold on to hope that Jason is coming back someday and that no one but Steve Burton will fill the role.
