“It’s been 33 years since I was thrust into the true crime spotlight after surviving a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head at the hands of my husband’s teenage lover,” Buttafuoco stated. “In the years that followed, I faced extreme public scrutiny, relentless media coverage, and was often mocked and misunderstood by the public.
Mary Jo Continues Her Story
What many didn’t see was the private toll it took on me-battling depression, suicidal thoughts, and addiction as I tried to make sense of a life that had been so violently and publicly shattered.”
She does not see herself as a victim, but as a survivor “who has turned unimaginable pain into purpose.” She added, “Through my book and my work as a motivational speaker, I’ve been able to share my truth and help others find strength in their own struggles. I am deeply honored to see my life story told from my perspective in this new Lifetime movie. This is not just a true crime headline, it’s my journey of resilience, healing, and reclaiming my voice.
Catching Viewers Up On The True Story The Movie Is Based On
For those who are not aware of the May 1992 incident, Lanier, portraying Mary Jo, will provide viewers with a visual representation of the events.
This took place outside her Long Island residence, where a 17-year-old shot her in the head. While Mary Jo was fighting for her life in the hospital, tabloids exaggerated the scandal.
At just 17, Fisher shot and seriously injured Mary Jo, who was married to Joey Buttafuoco, the man who had started a sexual relationship with the underage Fisher in 1990. Buttafuoco was later charged with statutory rape, to which he admitted guilt and served four months in prison.
Fisher Was Originally Charged With First-Degree Attempted Murder
Initially facing charges of first-degree attempted murder, Fisher ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated assault and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
Because of her age and her involvement with an older man, she became known in the tabloid press as “the Long Island Lolita.”
The narrative will also cover why Mary Jo remained married to Joey for seven years after the shooting. It will also delve into the ongoing physical and emotional effects of the bullet still lodged in her head, and how she has discovered resilience and peace despite enduring unimaginable trauma.
