General Hospital: Chris McKenna

General Hospital spoilers note that Chris McKenna is finally breaking his silence about his exit as Jack Brennan on the ABC soap.

The WSB Chief is officially dead (for now) as of the Tuesday, September 1 show, and the actor recently spoke with TV Insider to talk about his departure from the daytime drama.

Key Takeaways:

  • Chris McKenna admits he’s disappointed with how Brennan’s GH story ended, while remaining grateful for the role.
  • The actor reveals there were romances and storylines he wished GH had explored further.
  • McKenna was overwhelmed by the fan reaction to news of his departure.
  • Although Brennan is dead, McKenna teases that viewers will see him again soon.

Chris McKenna Is Disappointed

McKenna entered the land of Port Charles in February 2025 as Brennan, replacing Charles Mesure.

As it turns out, McKenna officially completed filming at General Hospital as of this past June. The actor told TV Insider, “I’m really grateful.

It’s disappointing how it’s ending right now, but this was a gift.” He also stated that he’s had time to adjust to Brennan’s departure and life after General Hospital.

McKenna is best known for his work on One Life to Live as Joey Buchanan, a part he played from 1990-1993. In addition, he was also in The Young and the Restless from 2014-2015 as Detective Mark Harding.

GH Holds A Special Place In McKenna’s Heart

While McKenna has been in a number of roles over the years, both in soaps and primetime, there was something special about his time on General Hospital

. The actor tells TV Insider, “Between my son being born and having this place to go to work for the past couple of years, this has been just a fantastic time.”

He added he appreciated being introduced to a “… new legion of soap fans who weren’t familiar with me.” McKenna noted he did, “… some powerful work I’m really proud of.”

Regrets, There’s Been A Few

With that said, McKenna did point out some missed opportunities. McKenna pointed to the romance that was hinted at between Brennan and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), but that never happened.

In addition, Brennan had nothing to do with the downfall of double-agent WSB agent Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) to ensure special guest star John Oliver sat in the spotlight as Z.

McKenna was also sad that Brennan and Jack and Nina Reeves’ (Cynthia Watros) love story was cut short.

Still, McKenna did have this to say, “I was given such a cool, gray, complex character. I’m very fortunate that I got as much as I did.”

He also commented on the fans’ reaction to Brennan’s departure, which was leaked in early August. McKenna stated, “The response was absolutely overwhelming and humbling. I’ve only been on for 18 months. So that was really amazing and meant so much to me.”

The actor revealed, “I’ll always look back on this with pride and with joy. I’m going to mourn Jack with everybody else, and this may be the end for Brennan, but Chris is doing fine, and you’ll see him very soon.”
