On his State of Mind podcast this Sunday, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) from General Hospital hosted Elizabeth Morales. He introduced her by saying she’s “a producer, actress, writer, and podcaster.” Maurice said that she’s “a doll.” They met about a year ago, and she promised to do the podcast, but she’s been really busy.

Explaining Her Roots

Starting off the podcast, the duo talked about Elizabeth Morales’ roots. She told Maurice, “Well, I was born in New Jersey, but my parents are Cuban and Spaniard. So, I’m Cuban…they fled here from Cuba when they were 15.”

So, her mom had to learn to speak the language. Morales also told the real-life Sonny Corinthos that when her parents arrived stateside, they “wanted to integrate, and so they kind of just really absorbed everything that was American.”

Fans may know Elizabeth Morales from The #Hashtagged Show, where she played several characters. She also featured in the Left Unsupervised Podcast in 2018. Morales started performing for her family when she was young and moved to Los Angeles where she still  lives.

Enjoying Comedy

One thing that Elizabeth loves is doing comedy. She talked about how it’s her “ultimate favorite in life,” noting that it has its roots in “tragedy.” She added, “I’ve had a lot of tragedy. So I always, always, always. [believe] laughter is my medicine.”

The actress also credited her grandmother for that, saying, “she was a big influence in my life and she had the kind of laugh…those…laughs [where] the laughter makes you laugh.”

The GH star got Elizabeth to talk about her creativity. She doesn’t really mind about the outcome. She added:

And I’m a firm believer as an artist, I need to create art. If somebody sees it, doesn’t see it, that’s not my issue. I don’t care. I am an artist. I need to create. So from there, I’ve created I’ve produced podcasts. I’m just starting a new podcast. It’s all it’s going to be all comedians. You know, comedians are really interesting people because although they’re really funny, they always there’s a darkness to them.

The Dark Side

As usual with Maurice Benard, the subject turned to mental health. The ABC star talked about his first breakdown, where he couldn’t stop crying, and Elizabeth opined that “boys have it worse.” She felt that it’s  because boys are [told] “Toughen up,” adding, “You know, boys don’t cry in the Latino community like that. You know, brush it off. Don’t make a big deal.”

From her perspective, Elizabeth felt that her upbringing was a bit sad because the way she was raised didn’t always feel “authentic.” Her dad used to make her dress up just to go to the “bakery,” in case the neighbors had something to say about her. Elizabeth felt that it wasn’t a “healthy” attitude. So, her dad “never got to be himself.”

Religion Was Hard

Elizabeth told the real-life Sonny Corinthos that her dad got very religious. And he never really relaxed after that. So, when she turned 20, she “went wild,” escaping the “cultural and religious conditioning.”

Today, Elizabeth feels that it’s okay for people to believe in anything they want, as long as it brings them “peace.”
