General Hospital Spoilers: The Battle for Sonny's Throne Has Begun, Who Will Step Up?

General Hospital spoilers and updates reveal for thirty years, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) has been a pivotal character on GH. However, recent hints from the show suggest a significant shift for the mob boss, fueled by speculation that actor Maurice Benard may be departing; who’ll take his place?

Sonny’s Been The Port Charles Mafia Don Over Thirty Years

Maurice Benard made his debut on General Hospital in 1993 after a successful stint on All My Children. His role as Sonny Corinthos reintroduced the mafia element to Port Charles, which became a central theme in the ABC soap opera for many years.

This storyline continues to evolve, now incorporating Sonny’s struggle with bipolar disorder; several months back, he inadvertently stopped taking his medication due to tampering.

The situation escalated when Sonny began experiencing heart issues, yet he kept this a secret, planning to undergo open-heart surgery without informing his family.

Ultimately, he chose to confide in his ex-wife, Carly Spencer (Laura Wright), and his security advisor, Brick (Stephen A. Smith).

Sonny’s Open Heart Surgery Worried His Fans, But Benard Is Staying-For Now!

The storyline involving open heart surgery raised alarms among fans about Maurice Benard’s potential departure from the show, especially since he had previously suggested he might retire soon.

Fortunately, Sonny pulled through the surgery, indicating that the actor will remain… at least for the time being.  However, this brush with death prompted Sonny to contemplate a significant lifestyle shift-this week on the ABC soap, Sonny didn’t need to face death to receive a special visitor.

Instead, he experienced a vivid dream induced by the sedation medication; fans hoped to see the return of one of his sons, either Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) or Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig). Instead, Sonny was visited by another key family member – his father, Mike Corbin (Max Gail).

Mike May Have Died In 2020 But He Assured Sonny He Hadn’t

In 2020, the character succumbed to Alzheimer’s, making a poignant appearance at Bobbie’s Diner to speak with Sonny. He reassured Sonny that he hadn’t passed away during surgery, leading to a heartfelt conversation that prompted Sonny to genuinely contemplate leaving the mob for good.

Meanwhile, as Sonny navigated this dream, a real threat loomed—a mysterious woman disguised as a nurse attempted to inject something into his IV.

Fortunately, Brick was present and swiftly eliminated the threat, resulting in a moment that had the internet buzzing. Fans wanted Stephen A. Smith to receive an Emmy for his role as Brick on General Hospital since 2016.

Who Would Take Sonny’s Place?

The prospect of Sonny stepping away from the mob has sparked lively discussions among fans about potential successors. Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) has been scheming to gain control of Port Charles’ waterfront from Sonny. Could this maneuver pave the way for her to become the reigning mob boss of the city?

One fan described the thought as an “intriguing” plot twist. Other contenders thrown into the mix included Michael, Kristina Corinthos-Davis (Kate Mansi), and even Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson); take a look at some of these ideas.

Fan Buzz About Sonny’s Possible Successor Varied

Kristina is overly emotional; I doubt Sonny would allow her or Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza) to take charge-it seems Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota) is attempting to seize control of Sonny’s domain.

I wish Madam Selina Wu (Lydia Look) would gradually phase out the mob narrative—they’ve exhausted all mob-related plots, and I’m utterly fatigued by the ‘whiny don’ trope!

I believe they’re preparing Kristina for a significant role; with her Corinthos and Cassadine lineage, she’s the ideal candidate for a mob boss.

Another user suggested it might be Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna). Yet another chimed in, questioning the need for a new Sonny, expressing frustration with the ‘criminal with a heart’ archetype.
